Xantia hdi project

Post by lexi »

I posted earlier that I had the chance of this model.

[/img]Image

Image

It`s had an owner for whom Citroen suspension has proved one of the mysteries of the universe. Also a garage that did the servicing who constantly shook their heads every time he took it in.

Anyway. It doesn`t seem to need much for Mot. First off are front discs and pads. It is 110bhp model. Are the front brakes the same as my 1.9td? Maybe bigger discs and more expensive?.

I will get the stuff this week. Question: Is it better to Hydraflush and change fluid before I do the discs and change any spheres ........or after.

There is one more issue for Mot. which I will bring up after I do the above work. Hey guys! What a nice quiet engine and got a bit of poke.

I still like my old "tractor " 1.9td though.

HDi 110 uses different brakes to the 1.9TD - same as those fitted to 2.0T, V6 and 2.1TD. Bigger and more expensive - about £100 for pads and discs from GSF  At least the bottom of the caliper is bolted on, and much easier to remove the lesser type with the pin that seizes in! Don't do what I did though and fail to engage the lugs on retaining bolt with the flats on the slides - it bends the lugs, and they are tricky to straighten out again

Looks good.

I'd start the hydraflush now to get it moving tbh.

The discs and pads are not as cheap as the 1.9td. bigger on both counts IIRC.

And i know how you feel about loving the tractor more even though the HDI is quiet at idle.

Has that car been run an flat spheres??

Looks nice however, in the first pic, it looks like the rear arm is leaning in a bit, the wheel doesn't look straight. or is that just the picture??

Ditto then brakes, the 110bhp uses V6 / XM Brake pads... estates always have, I had a 19.td estate on a P, 1996 in, and it had the bigger pads and disks...

Thanks guys.
Paul: I don`t know about rear arm...it was ok on Mot.
The suspension is on hgh in pics.

Got the Discs and Pads at GSF....£107. Ialso got the Hydrocourcinage and a front accumulator sphere. I will do the fluid change first.

On the ramp at MOT the rear suspension took forever to come up.......so not quite right there. Guy I bought it from constantly rabbited about how complicated the suspension was. Kept going on about how it had new front spheres a year ago..oh yeah! what about the centre one? did ya fall out with that? It looks like it`s been there a long while . It`s ticking and has a leak. Hope it aint damaged the HP.

Leak on the regulator?? A sign its been running on a flat accumilator sphere too long!!

Slow rear suspension! Before people shout Rear height corrector it wont be it will be more likely the unit that controls the height corrector!

These are removable WITHOUT disturbing the feed pipes to the height corrector, and the two actuating levers that control the height corrector, one from the anti roll bar clamp, and other from the rod attached to the lever in the car, can sieze badly on the rear..

Remove the unit is the easyest way to free them up..

Did the Hydraflush today. As expected the filters were dirty. I found that the pipes had to be undone as I wasn`t able to tilt the reservoir without dismantling an awkward air pipe that doesn`t seem to be there on the 1.9td.

On starting up, the suspension is still slow to rise from low on rear end.

Ya know what gets it to rise quickly? keep your foot on the brake. My 1.9td does this........why?

I have the front centre sphere to fit tomorrow. GSF gave me a washer with it. Does this go on?

Very nice project :) Quite a late model Xantia, the HDI is certainly a good engine, very economical too.

WHen you have your foot on the brake, the car will not go up until you take it off? However, when you lift off it wil rise quickly as the pressure has built up.

Replacement spheres, new LHM and a good lubrication of the heigh correctors should have it working correctly again.

Lexi, the only seal used with that front centre sphere is the usual ring. Just a wipe with LHM on the seal faces is all needed.

Do you know how to date the genuine spheres? I like to know how old everything I take off, was - and look for production dates. Helps paint a picture of how clever the last garage were. There'll be a four digit code like "9224" - first digit is the year, last three are the day of that year numerically ranked.

Cheers, Adam.

The other thing you may want to check out if you're a serial "upgrader" like me, is whether much of the wiring is already in place for other options. I found cruise control and the foglights were plug-and-play installs.

Guys . This is in log book as an SX HDI. I`m told it is the 110.

Is it normal for this spec model to have steel wheels and plastic trims?.

This is the number stamped in O/S inner/outer junction.

VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

On the bulkhead is EHJD.

Any clues?
