C5 2.2 HDI (anti Pollution Fault)
hi guys, i purchased my car with this fault and the symptons are as follow.
when i drive the car and get into 4th or 5th gear and put my foot down the anti pollution fault light message come on, the engine management & service lights come on and it goes in to limp mode.
it will stay like this untill i turn it off then all the lights stay on but out of limp mode , after a further 3 stops and turn the ignition off all the lights go off and it runs fine untill you get to 4th or 5th gear and then it all starts over again.
for e.g if i am driving the car and stop 3 time in one day then the fault would happen every day.
the diesel fluid was changed 10,000 miles ago
Has anybody had this problem
Thanks David

my local pug dealers parts manager says when they top up/replace the anti polution fluid (ELOY being the earlyer type), cant remember what the later fluid is called, anyhow he says they also replace a sensor this stops the light comeing back on after the above, im not sure which sensor but i could find out,
the earlyer system has a level float in the tank, and the later is just an electronic counter
regards malcolm

More secrets from the Pug People...
Ive had a Pug Technichian here to solve some HDi faults with a Lexia..
He told me that you CAN put Diesel in the system.. Its not clever, it DOES NOT know WHAT the fluid is, it just knows IF theres a fluid in there or not, so anything can be put in!!
IT DOES NOT HURT The sytem either!!
I asked him about it, because Ive a man with a 2.2 HDi and its showing the fault, BUT DOES NOT go into limp mode for him as of YET..
Rgds

I may have got this totally wrong but i think Eolys Fluid does a very similar job to that of a product called AdBlue which is used in HGV and Buses.
It has been known for HGV owners to actually top this fluid up with tap water to no known ill effects
Its also a lot less expensive and again the system only knows to inject/drip feed a fluid from a tank into the diesel tank at a given rate in the case of AdBlue i think its about 3-5% of fuel used

I will agree the system does not know what is put in the tank but if the right fluid is not used on the psa cars the filter cannot regenerate itself and will block up as the fluid lowers the temp that the soot particles burn at 400-500 celcius without the fluid it needs 600-700 celcius
some of our customers have found this out the hard way espicially with the 2.2 hdi they ignored the fap filter warnings an kept driving once the filter blocks the engine cannot breathe easily and usually they create lots of crankcase pressure and through the breather system run up on their own oil and as most of these cars are auto the engine cannot be stopped by stalling
the other way they go is to blow the turbo seals from exhaust to intake and go up this way
so it will not hurt the additive system as all this does is inject a measured amount of whatever is in the additive tank into the fuel tank
but it can destroy the engine in severe cases without the correct additive

Hi Paul
there are 2 basic systems those with additive and those without those with are covered above the others use 1 or 2 post main injection pulses to emit high temp burning gasses into the cat to start the burn off process through the cat and filter these systems are cheaper to produce and mantain but usually are less fuel efficiant as they use more fuel to complete the process but town cars and those that are never driven on motorways still suffer with blocked fap filters
cheers
Mick

Hi David
were both counters reset when the fluid was topped up,
what year is your car,
how many miles has the car done,
has the fap filter been changed,
cheers

There could be loads of things wrong with the car, the anti pollution light doesent just mean a fault with the particle filter, it relates to most of the engine management system. you really need to get the fault codes read to give an idea where the fault lies.davidgoodwin1803 wrote:in answer to my own question, does anybody know what could be wrong with my carand why it is showing the fault message almost every day.
thank David
If its a mk1 C5 the particle filter is due for replacement at either 50,000 miles or 75,000 miles depending on RP number.
