Citroen Tightening Torques

Post by CitroJim »

In the Citroen Workshop Manuals they use a strange (to me anyway :roll: ) method of measuring torque wrench settings.

Typically...
Tightening torque = 3,5 m.daN
I'm not at all familiar with this unit of measure.

How can this be converted into something I understand like foot-pounds?

Thanks,

Confused of Newport Pagnell...

I believe that m.daN is the deka newton-meter

1m.daN = 10Nm
1m.daN = 7.38 ftlbs

Yeah just multiply it by 10 to get Nm

Brilliant :D

Thanks Toby, very much appreciated.

I'm still very imperial in my measurements and so are my torque wrenches :roll:

This is the current MKS unit of torque in metres * decaNewtons. 3,5m.daN is 35 Newton metres!

1 Nm = 0.7375621 ft.lb.
10 Nm = 1 m.daN = 7.37...ftlb

So 3,5 m.daN = 26ft.lb. on your torque wrench.

m.daN is a daft unit - 10x too big for mechanics' purposes (unless you work on earthmovers!).

That's just like the French - invent a perfectly good set of units, then make up some random ones. They like to use kgf / cm2 for pressure, instead of the perfectly good and simple n/m2 (otherwise known as bar). They built a couple of plants here in Grangemouth, and decided 690V was a good idea for the 3 phase supply, instead of the 440v used everywhere else on site!
