Xantia Plipper Repair - replacing the IR LED

Post by Old-Guy »

Last night, I successfully replaced the LED (broken legs) in our one-and-only plipper with the one robbed from a redundant Sony DVR remote control.

Full How-To on my personal site - hope it helps someone one day.

Congratulations on the successful repair.

It's quite common for a solder repair over a break in a component leg or a PCB track to fracture again. Solder is not very strong in that respect. The secret is to add in a piece of very fine (copper) wire such as one strand from a stranded cable, so that it bridges the crack. Cover the whole lot in solder and make sure that the wire is soldered to a few mm out from the crack itself. The wire makes the repair last a lot longer.
