Xantia MK1 TD play in steering

Unread post by ohms »

Hi all,

My xantia seems to have a bit of play in the steering. It's not drastic and is hardly noticeable, but having driven a ZX with tight steering recently it seems obvious that somethings amiss.

The car has new track rod ends, so it's not these. the play seems obvious when turning slightly and then going over a bump, you can feel the wheel moving around ever so slightly. As I say, it's not a massive amount, but I would like to tighten things up.

Never played about with xantia steering before so not sure of the problems. It feels as though the rack mounts might have wear in them, or possibly steering U/J, what tends to wear??

Also, steering feels quite heavy compared to other xantias I've owned. :D :D

Thanks chaps

I'd suggest checking the strut tops, if you haven't already.

Check the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column.

I had an MOT failure a few years ago on a MK 1 Xantia due to play in the steering. Some mobile Citroen guys repaired it quite reasonably and they explained it to me as being some sort of joints on the inboard ends of the track rods. They were Stealer only parts.
