Hi Bob -

Are the direction indicators working OK ?
The hazard lights function is a change-over double contact, bridging both sides indicators to the indicator relay.
However the hazard function is taken from a separate fuse F26 (15Amps).
Replace the fuse even if it looks OK, as the blade contact pins may be badly corroded.
The fuse is fed directly from the battery +12V distribution box.
If that does not help, the hazard switch itself may be defective or its connector has dislodged.

NOTE : the normal indicators function is taken from fuse F28 (15Amps).

The cigarette lighter is fed by fuse F16 (20Amps).
This fuse cam be selected to feed directly from battery or ignition key, by fuse position.

Above Fuse ref # valid for both series 1 & 2 models.

The heated rear screen is fed via a timer relay, which in turn is fed by fuse F27 (series 1) or fuse F29 (series 2) 30Amps in both cases.
The fuse is fed directly off the battery +12V.

Replacing the sump gasket is a straightforward job, except you should note the location of any different bolts used.
You may find it advantageous replacing the engine oil during this operation.
In case of aircon fitted, dont be tempted to dismantle the piping. Instead free the sump from the a/c compressor supportings its weight not disturbing the pipework.

Final note :
Xantia changes from series 1 to series 2 during '98.
'98 models therefore always needs mention of either the series designation or the OPR number.

Purely out of interest, I read your thorough explanation last night.

So what happened today? When I indicate (right or left) ALL the indicators flash (but not the hazard switch). I used the hazards last evening just before putting the car away (while removing a piece of junk from the middle of the main road).

I deduce that the hazard relay has stuck on (return spring broken?) but I haven't a clue where to look for it. Help!!

The car has got a tow hitch with full electrics (and the trailer repeater now flashes). I don't think the 'trailer' relay is a potential culprit. On the rare occasions when I've used the hazards my attention has been on something else, so I've no idea what the trailer repeater normally does when the hazards are on.
