ML5 handbrake cables / adjustment

Unread post by RichardW »

Having stripped and cleaned the front brakes today because the near side front brake has been dragging - much more wear evident on the outside pad here. I have always thought the HB was a bit tight on this car so I have backed the cables off a couple of turns which makes things feel better. I will need to replace the pads and discs soonish, just thinking I might bang in some new HB cables while I've got it on the stands and the brakes apart. 2 questions though:

1. Do I remember right that the LH cable for ML5 boxes is dealer only?
2. What does everyone else adjust them up to? Handbrake on at 2 clicks, or just free play in the cables at the calipers?

Cheers

Yes, The n/s is longer but only on the HDi 110, I believe this is not the case with the HDi 90 or anything else fitted with the ML5T

Not quite Toby, the longer N/S cable is used in all vehicles fitted with the ML5 'box, that's the Activa, 2.1TD and possibly the V6 as well. The HDi 90 will use the standard cable as it has a BE3 'box.

It's longer but it's not dealer only. I got mine from a motor factor. The listings were all wrong in his book so make sure there are two lengths available and you get the longer one.
