hi all
I was thinking of replacing the the cambelt on my S reg scenic 1.6 but as ive never done this job before on a scenic i wondered what is involved, and do i need any special tools for the job
im told its best to get a cambelt kit, and ive had quote,s from garages for this job but id like to know if i could do this job myself to save some cash ive done a cambelt before but never on a scenic.
so if anyone can give me some information on this it,d be great or should i just leave it to the professionals
thanks in advance for any help

I may be terribly wrong -
But I do believe a cambelt job on a Scenic 1.6 is a straighforward cambelt job.
a) You will need to lock cam(s) and crank, to ensure its timed correctly - BEFORE removing old belt (avoiding valves contacting the pistons !)
A selection of drills usually is a good source of tight fitting locking dowels, but be careful, the dowels may need to have stepped diameters.
b) You must ensure the new belt is a tight fit on the camcogs - on the run with no tensioner, belt should in fact be a bit hard to fit.
c) any tensioner slack while fitting the belt
d) first try : set the tensioner initially
e) turn engine by hand to let the belt settle
f) back off the cam to hold the belt tight
g) re tension the tensioner wheel
h) run engine a couple of minutes
j) re-check belt tension. The longest belt run should just exactly twist 90deg by 2-finger force only.
done

Hi AndersDK
Thanks that is very helpfull the only thing im worried about now is gaining access in that that my car has air conditioning and does the air con pump have to be removed to get the auxillary belt off or can it be slackend off at the alternator end?.
Also like on the rovers that i have done does the top engine mounting have to be removed and the engine jacked up.
Also can i use ordinary right sized drills as cam and camshaft tools but i dont understand what you mean when you say stepped drills as all drills are stright edged
sorry for so many questions but i need to know all these things before i even start the job
thanks in advance

On most engines its necessary to jack up engine and remove the upper support. It depends - have a look and try figure out how thew belt must be removed & fitted.
Not a stepped drill shank
- a stepped dovel
Some engines have one diameter dovel hole in the top/block and a larger diameter hole in the cog. That calls for a stepped dovel, as a standard drill bit wont do the job then.
I would certainly try first off if a standard drill bit does the job straight away.
Usually the drill bit needed would be an 8mm or 10mm.

Hi agian
Thanks agian AndersDK
well ive had a visual at the job and two things are concerning me one is the alternator its mounted on the rear of the engine and looks a right job to get at also the air con pump belt i hazard a guess its through the auxillary belt tensioner but dont have a clue about the alternator belt any help in those areas
thanks in advance

Both auxillary drive belts will have some form of a bolt locking in a slotted hole.
Look for any obvious points that could slack these belts, if a bolt is slacked off.
Usually the tension rollers are both spring loaded and pre-set by a bolt in a slot.
Make a sketch on each drivebelt and its involved rollers. That will most surely help you getting them right again later.
They are not that critical as the cambelt is - as long as they are fitted correctly.
Also they tend to shout out loadly (sqeal) if you do not tension them corretly. So they will in fact themselves help you getting them right !

hi agian AndersDK
Well after looking at the prices of the parts needed cambelt tensioner water pump etc then contacting a few local garage.s and getting a few prices i found one who will do the job for me at a very resonable price which includes everything i could do the job myself which would cost me about £80 this garage can do it for me with all new parts for £107 and that is suppled and fitted
and the work carries a written 12 month guarantee
ive had work done on the car before by this garage and that was very satisfactory it saves me getting under the car in the street and getting filthy for the sake of £37 so i think this is the best option.
What do you think
thanks agian for all your help

hi agian all
update
well yesterday i had the timing belt water pump and tensioner replaced by the garage i mentioned and the job is very satisfactory also it carries a 12 month or 12000 mile warrenty.
i asked the garage to retain the old parts for my inspection which he did also a sticker on my engine to say when the belt was done
all in all im very pleased and would recommend the garage to anyone they also do a lot work for a local taxi firm and very reliable
