meganne engine trouble

hi new to this forum so hello

i have a megane coupe 1.6 8v
its an 1996 n reg

i have a really bad engine problem it starts and drives fine for about the first 5 6 miles then it start to lose power and seems like its running on 3 cyclinders
stall at junctions and idles very badly then my exhaust fell off last week so i had a new full system fitted new cat the lot anyway today at the garage it started to run lumpy again so the mechanic was shocked to see the cat was glowing red hot they havent a clue what it could be seems like its burning to much fuel cos my petrol consumpiton has halved its not worth much money and ive just wasted £200 on an exhaust unless its an easy fix can anyone help me ive checked the spark plugs/and leads all seem fine one suggestion is it could be the ecu and been quoted £500 the car isnt worth buying one anyone else had similar problems? the cat was glowing really hot bright red anyway hope someone cann help me please many thanks craig

Yes I'm afraid it is the ECU I've joined this site today and I've had the same problem with the Megane I bought 6 months ago. The cost in France for the repair is 780 Euros and I should get my car back Wednesday. If you still have your problem please be aware that if it is the ECU itthe car can just shudder to a halt at any time. This doesn't just apply to Renault. If you still have the car you can get your ECU rebuilt for half the price of a new one and it's returned uncoded according to the sites I found. I searched for ECU for Megane and came up with loads of sites in the UK. Good luck
