Stuck wheels...
I must have offended someone in a past life....
My mate gave me a pair of wheels with snow tyres on about 3 years ago after he crashed his Xantia. I've not fitted them since, as I had alloys on my last Xantia, and they had the wrong bolts in. Given the forecast thought I would bung them on on Monday pm, which I duly did in the dark, below freezing, whilst it was snowing Has it snowed here since? Has it heck.... Went out this afternoon to get a look at the brakes, and can I get the wheels off? Can I heck - stuck fast, presumably on the centre boss. They were a little bit tight going on, but not that bad, but they are not for budging now Anyone got any ideas how to get them off? My current thoughts are to make a puller out of a piece of angle iron, some hook bolts and a centre bolt to pull it off against the end of the driveshaft.
On the up side I did manage to fit a new pair of washer jets, which means I will be able to see where I am going now! Interestingly, on the MK2 Xantia, there is no separate cross tube linking the jets - the tube is formed into the seal at the back of the bonnet.

My best method :
Loosen all wheelbolts on stuck wheels, but ensure they will still keep the wheel to the hub.
Drive - very careful - a short trip round the block, while you take advantage of as many turns as possible to put side forces on the turning wheels.
Works every time.

I used to have a ZX running on 306 wheels which always ended up stuck on...i used to sit on the ground infront of the wheel with good boots on and literally boot the wheels on one side then the other of the face if thast makes sense so they shuffle off the hub.
1993 Citroen xm 2.1td, silver/grey, bowling ball wheel trims, 210k and climbing...
I have had to do the same, and also on wheels which are larger than car wheels I.E. P.C.V and commercials with alloy rims, and even steels do stick badly.citronut wrote:the usual way to remove stuck wheels is a block of wood and a club hammer, hold wood against the inside edge of the wheel rim and give it a good bashing with the irish screw driver (hammer)
regards malcolm
The combination of the block of wood being hit with a sledge hammer, and a good kicking, will get them going while the nuts or bolts being left on, but loose to catch it so the wheel does not go flying always works well.

Thanks Anders. Worked a treat: 100m up the road and back with the bolts backed off a turn and they came right off. Now cleaned up and copperslipped the boss to make getting them off next time easier.AndersDK wrote:My best method :

Re: Stuck wheels...
Often doesn't even need that far as long as you can get one or two turns and a good stamp on the brakes in.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be...
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Re: Stuck wheels...
I know of somebody who had spent half an hour trying to get a wheel off the hub (the bolts had been undone and removed). I remembered a trick my Mum used. After making sure the car was secure, and not going to fall down, I sat down fairly close to the wheel, and then (making sure to contact with the sole of my foot) kicked the top of the wheel hard. It fell off.
