The V6 in question is a late MK1 (R plate) with a dead autobox. Now I'm just a little confused as looking through my Xantia "Presentation" books that come with the workshop manuals, the V6 did not appear to exist in MK1 guise. They were introduced in MY1997 as a MK2 "Facelift" according to the aforesaid publications. So what's that all about?
Did these MK1 V6s have the ZF 4HP20 autobox or the earlier 4HP18? I ask as on the pictures I've seen of the car in question, it appears to have an oil temperature gauge on the dash as apposed to the gear indicator on the MK2 V6
I'm rather keen to retain the autobox as it's been a long time since I've enjoyed a big auto. The last one was a 2.7 V6 Holden Commodore in Australia and that was a hoot and a half.
What's the prospects of a successful repair of the autobox? I'm game to have a go. I've studied how the 4HP20 works (one clever 'box that!) and I've gleaned from various sources that they all seem to die eventually and that they're a bit of a ticking time-bomb. But why, what dies in them? No source has been very specific but hints are laid at lubrication issues and the formation of crud and rubbish in the oil that eventually causes the hydraulics to fail.
The autobox in question was OK and then just died, no drive at all. Would it be a reasonable assumption to believe that the 'box is choked with debris and that some critical hydraulic line has become blocked and thus not allowing hydraulic pressure to get to the clutch packs and brakes?
Would it be feasible to have the 'box off, strip it, clean it and then might it work again? I know an autobox is a bit complex but if I treat it like a giant diesel pump I should be OK...
How, if when you drain it and only 3 litres can be drained of the 8 litres total in it, can you refill a dry 'box after it has been stripped/rebuilt?
All I know is it is going to be an interesting project...
