VW Fit/Use Citroen Idea !

Unread post by ACTIVE8 »

Well they have updated the Golf to have amongst other things a lip on the wing mirrors to get the rain to run away, air bags for the knees, etc etc.

They have also included (fog) lights that turn!

Now I wonder where they got that idea of lights that turn from?

Imitation is the most sincere form of flatery!

I've also noticed this on the discoverys headlamps from the last few years, this must be what you're talking about Active8
That apparently was a new innovation and all!

Wasn't it the Edsel that had the first turning headlamp (single, center one)?

A mate asked for help changing his Range Rover tyre today.

He told me the car had adjustable suspension height, and to change the wheel you had to set to the highest (service) setting, then jack it up.

I just smiled and said "Oh, really?"

The Discovery version is rather crude as it works by simply turning on a separate bulb which is pointed at 45°!

The other way that Citroen are again seeing others catch up with them, is when you see a Mercedes turn and the fog light on that side come on, so the driver can see where they are going.

Although at first I am sure others have assumed the driver is dumb, because they have a fog light on when they do not need it, and because they have what seems to be a bulb out.

A case of copying the idea, but doing it in a more basic way.

So again Citroen  got there first, and others are now many years later following.

Ive not taken much notice of the new Golf, but i suspect the fog lights dont atually turn but just light up the side which is indicating.

I know mercedes have had this for a few years now, its also used on the new Seat Ibiza, but they dont turn, just one side comes on, making it look like your an idiot driving with fog lights on and only one is working :? Or there is an electrical fault. A pointless thing in my opinion.

Although there are a number of cars which have turning headlamps now, in fact i think its even an option on the Vauxhall Disastra!

Although they may well turn, ill have to start digging into that!

An old idea, a few yanks from the sixties and seventies had what they called "cornering lights" mounted flush on the lower side of the wings. Though of course as usual Citroen pre-dates them all!

Even the new Ibiza has foglights which come on whern you either turn sharply or indicate with headlights on. Seems an odd idea to me, certainly looks odd.

Although quite a few cars do now have turning headlamps.

Nothing turns quite as much as the D series though, new cars have a very limited turning angle.

Given that many new cars need a dealer to replace front fog bulbs, the cynical part of me thinks this is just a gimmick to decrease the life of the bulbs and earn dealers more cash.

Yes it does come across like a gimmick, in the look at me, look what my car does, and don't I now stand out from the crowd, well yes they do, and they look like a K**B!

Agreed it will shorten the life of the bulb being repeatedly off, and on all the time, and you could imagine problems with the police, if they believe the owner has had the fog lights on, when they should not do, and now turned them off to fool them.

I dont think that was ever available on the Traction, our 55 model doesnt have it, a DS thing i suspect. Although didnt the Dyane have it as an option, well a similar design, the traffic clutch?

I think even the awful Fiat Sceicento had a clutchless gearchange at some point
