Gears on a 2001 Renault megane 1.6 16v

Unread post by driving_all_the_time »

I've got a renault megane, 2001, 1.6 16v and i find when the engine is cold it is really hard to select gears, and the gears kind of crunch slightly when i change gear - this only happens when the engine is cold...

I've been told it's my clutch but the car came with a brand new clutch fitted before i bought it. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be, are the gears supposed to be like this? Oh and when i start the engine when it's cold i can hear a churning sort of sound which sounds although it's coming from the gearbox, is this normal?

Any help much appreciated!

I would hardly consider those symptoms to be normal.

My guess is that they have refilled or topped up the gearbox with incorrect oil. Some of the boxes are very particular about the oil used in them and the wrong weight will reduce their useful life dramatically.

Can't remember the grade of oil off the top of my head but I think it is 75/80 but someone in the know will soon confirm or deny that or shoot the whole theory down in flames
