Handbrake slipped when parking

Hi everyone, not posted for a very long time with a young family and a "so far" relatively reliable Xantia I haven't had the time or need to. Anyway parking the car yesterday I pulled on the handbrake all ok then released it to roll forward a little, when pulling it up it slipped and went up a lot higher. It still bites very well (hill starts not a problem) but the travel is far too much. Before I go out into the freezing cold does anyone know where to start. I don't want to start jacking the car up etc if I need to start inside the car. As always any help / advise much appreciated.

Maybe one cable has snapped.

i agree with John 1 cable gone, and im afraid that means you have to get under the car, as it will be left or right one, and they terminate in a box at the front N/S of the exhaust tunnel

that wont fix it you will need a jack,some tools and a cable,

Cheers Malcom, I didn't get out there in the end too bl***y cold for me. Seeing as it still works I will get the tea out next weekendenough time to get myself prepared may even get in some Earl Grey.

handbrake cables look an absolute pest to replace but in reality it's an absolute doddle. Always nice when a job that looks hard turns out simple; so often a job looks simple but proves to be anything but

I'll second that, Jim. I messed about for ages trying to bodge a new end on a cable on previous car thinking it would be a 'mare to change. Had to fit new one for the MOT and was almost speechless to find it took <1 hour, and that included getting the axle stands back from under the Visa!

Just watch if it's the near side cable and the car is a 110 HDi or 2.0T - these need a longer cable not supplied by the aftermarket....

Thanks James. It is always left in gear. PS had no time to fix it so getting the garage to do it as some other things need doing as well.
