Adding a Dash Button for Xantia Central Locking

Series 2; I've had a bit of a search and couldn't find any promising titles in the results.

All I want to fit, is some sort of dash button like many other cars have, where you press it briefly and the doors all lock. If it were push on/push off, possibly an unlock feature as well.

Has anyone tried this?

Good suggestion to start looking at. I've also got the Series I Central Locking diagrams from Jim, so there's my other reference.

OK, further investigation tells me the Series II central locking is driven by the body computer, apparently located behind the glovebox.

When you push down or pull up either of the front door buttons, it makes a ground to one of two wires that return to the body computer.

What I don't know, is whether that grounding out, is transient or if it holds the new contact position. Any expert commentary?

It is almost certain to be transient, because that is the way these things are done. It would also be more difficult to untangle the logic if each door gave a permanent status signal.

Great advice; thanks. I might look for a rocker switch, then - rather than a push type.

It honestly surprises me that one's not already fitted.

This is something I've been meaning to do for ages too, I had intended to complicate things a little by making it automatic, so that the doors locked when drive is selected. I shall follow this thread with interest. Does anyone have the pinout of a series 2 body computer?

I'm sure mine will lock the doors when the forward speed exceeds 5mph - it locks the tailgate at this speed regardless.
One day

I will actually investigate this and not just dive into the car and pull away like a bank robber.
My son has taken my car to Scotland today which is a perfect get-out for not doing it right away.

If mine can do it, perhaps yours will have the capability inbuilt too, no need for an input from the autobox?

My Kangoo does the same thing, locks the doors when you exceed 5mph. I know how to turn this feature on and off on the Kangoo but didn't know it was a feature on the Xantia.

Am i missing something, but how would this button be any better than simply pressing the door lock on the drivers door, as that locks all the doors too, and its in reach of the driver as much as the dash board is.

Well for me, it wasn't so much a button as the automatic locking that I wanted.

The driver's door is in need of some TLC, as a bunch of incompetent panelbeaters stitched it back on before my custodianship. Their efforts included damaging the lock button, and breaking the mirror control panel (now replaced).

It's made me aware of how fragile the lock buttons can be (besides, they're $26 each here) - so I felt the dash switch was a preferable extra.

That's a quality business NOT, the standard of workmanship sounds very bad!

What did they do, place it on the door, and kick it on?

Just a bit incompetent!

The OSF door apparently detached (as is their wont) and this firm couldn't figure out how to gut the internals of it. The lock button was superglued onto its wire rod, and my non-functional mirror control bodged together with black RTV silicone. I haven't opened up the panel yet but expect the foam liner is shredded, and know some of the trim panel fixings are damaged.

It could have been worse - at least they didn't cut the harness wires, then use crimp connectors to re-join!

When the NSR door started to crack away, I didn't make the previous owner's mistake - I gutted the panel, then it went off to the local Ferrari specialist!

Opens and shuts like a Swiss watch, that one.

Anyhow - with such contrasts here; either paying through the nose or getting shafted - you can see why DIY is pretty much the preferred course for many procedures. The lock button will be a nice upgrade IMO.

I had a p reg megane that had a switch on the dash to lock the doors and i think my 02 reg clio did it automatically once the car was moving, although you could disable it by holding down a button on the dash for a few seconds.

My old ax also did this but i think that was down to the alarm being knackered as the locks kept on popping up and down at random intervals. something to do with one of the door light sensors missing and the alarm couldn't sense if the door was open or not
