Clunking noise?

Unread post by driving_all_the_time »

Hi, recently I've been experiencing a clunking noise with my 2001 1.6 16v Renault Megane. If I put the car in reverse and accelerate quite harshly it will clunk, then if I put it into first from reverse and accelerate sharply it will some times do it.

I've had a good look at the engine mounting and I think it may be that as the gear stick moves quite a lot which is something that has never happened with any other car I've had.

Any help much appreciated.

Most likely the rear "dogbone" engine mount/stabiliser.

I've just got a brand new one of those from Renault about 1 month ago... don't think it could have worn away already?

I woudn't have thought so, but that's the usual culprit.

Check the gearbox mount too

Does the gearbox mount have a pointy sort of thing in it, with a black bar going across to the engine bay from the gearbox?

Cheers for the help

It's on the right hand side as you look at it, easy and cheap to replace. You can also fit an additional mount from a 19.

I've had a good look and that seems to be the mount that needs replacing, thanks for the help. Just to check, should the gear-stick move at all when on and off the accelerator? No other car I've driven has had a gear-stick that moves a lot, does mine just move so much because of the worn mount or do Renaults just have gear-sticks with a lot of play?

Thanks

You've answered your own question on that one really.

So it only moves because of the worn mount?

Bit of both, my Coupe lever moved back and forth a bit.
