Will a Xantia lock change cause transponder problems?

Post by rory_perrett »

Not sure I want to confess this here but despite getting my old 2.1TD Xantia running again after the cambelt “jumped” a few teeth I’m thinking of stripping it for spares for the HDi I bought when I needed a replacement in a hurry.

While the remote central locking packed up some while ago in the old car it does have 3 keys (2 plips and the spare) whereas the replacement car only came with one plip key.

If I was to swap the door and ignition locks over and the key insert in the working plip I would then have 3 keys that would open the doors and 1 plip that would operate the remote central locking. HOWEVER would I then have problems with the transponder/ electronic immobiliser? Or is the reader coil in the ignition lock matched in some way to the key?

this will depend on if you have the IR plip or the transponder type, with the IR type it wont cause any probs, but it is not that simple with the transponder type, as there is a tranciver atached around the ignition lock which hand shakes with the chip in the key, so this would all need reprogrammig, with the likes of a LEXIA 2/3

Thanks - unfortunatley its a Series 2 so its RF with the transponder. Presumable there is no way to swap the trnasponders as well.

You would need to swap the ECU & the CPH unit aswell, the aerial round the ingnition barrel isnt coded so doesent need to be swapped

im sure you wont be able to swap the ECU as 1 car is aTD and the other a HDI, and i belive the code is stored in the engine managment ECU,

it may be possible to re/code the key codeing in the ECU,

im sure Jim will corect me on that one if im wrong (me never )

Never noticed that.

You cant change the code in the ECU, not with lexia anyway.

If you fit a new lock set you only need the transponder code and a lexia or proxia to program in the keys.
The only thing is you need to do all three at the same time either done at a dealer or specialist.

Thanks Craigmanc I rather suspected there would be some complication. Don't think I'll bother with a lock change, just have to make sure I don't loose the one key I have. Might change one of the door locks as it looks a fairly easy job and then at least I would be able to get in with a spare key.

Catch 22 as once you change the ignition lock you can't drive the car to the dealer and if I was paying to have the ignition lock changed and keys reprogrammed it would probably be cheaper just to buy a new key, then at least I would have 2 plips.

Slight pre Christmas rant - I do sometimes wonder whether features are built in by manufacturers to make it difficult and secure future income through, and for, the dealer network? I suppose it also secures new sales when otherwise perfectly good cars are scrapped for being uneconomic to repair because they need a £1500 black box. OK rant over.

Happy Christmas one and all.

All you need to do in that case is to pull the transponder aerial off the barrel put your old key inside it when you start the car & it will start fine.

i have just set a customer up with a new chiped key on an Sreg 306, if you have the code referance on the card which came with the car from new, you can just buy the key and have the dealers parts man cut it to match the original, but if you dont have the code you will have to pay the dealer to get that for you,

in the case i mentioned the total including supplying, cutting and paying for code was £46 squide

then i coded the key with my DIAG 2000

The card with the code ref didn't come with the car. One way or another I'm either going to have to risk living with one key or handing some of my hard earned cash over to a dealer.

my local pug dealer was going to charge another £30 squide to install the new key code, as an added cost to the £46,

i understand if you still have an original key there are after market key shops, that can capture the code from your key and install it onto a new key,
