Unread post by citroenxm »

Hi ALL...

A quikie really, Anyone changed FRONT brake pads on C5 Series 1,? Is it straight forward? I assume they are a wind in calliper? Also are there different sorts for the C5 or do they use ONE style accross the range... my indi says theres only one type for them listed...

Thanks

I let a Citroen magician sort mine out these days and I had new discs and pads fitted last year.

The guy was quite apologetic about the price. They were larger than any others he had done previously and slightly dearer (£23).

It crossed my mind that they may have run out of the standard calipers and fitted larger V6 discs and calipers instead.

Pure speculation on my part, nothing to back this up with but it is as well to be aware before buying and being stuck with unsuitable parts.

I am my customers "garage" and Im dooing them for him!

The pads are "massive" compared to the Xantia or XM pads...

Thanks for your reply...

In case my meaning was garbled there, mine were larger that any C5 pads that he had dealt with previously, he wasn't comparing them to other Citroen models.

He was quite familiar with C5s and didn't bat an eye when asked to refurbish the rear calipers. Same old same old for him, even though Xantias do the same.

Normal cost for C5 front pads was £16.

If your 2.2 is the same as my 2litre the pistons have to be wound back in the correct direction. Offside go back anticlockwise, the nearside clockwise. Not to do so will b***** them - so I'm told.

Hi,

Important you do wind back pistons in opposite directions.

Also pistons have slope sided cut outs in them rather than the straight sided ones on xantia etc. This makes using the "screw diver" method of winging back more difficult.

You can get "handed" windback tools but there are about £15 each. I have also seen adaptor "cubes" (each side suits a different piston type) for use with socket wrench, but have not tried them.

Some "authorities " also recommend opening the bleed valve when winding back so as not to push potentially "dirty" brake fluid through the ABS mechanism.

Regards

Fred
