406 fuel gauge

Can anyone advise why my fuel gauge suddenly jumps up to beyond full?

Tap the front of the dash and it goes back to it's correct level.

Only does it intermittently

Bad contacts on the rear of the gauge.

i do have a brand new fuel gauge, if i remember it is for a 406, i will check today
