Recently (i.e. last Thursday) purchased a 55 plate Scenic Dynamique 1.9 DCi 130 with 26,500 on the clock and a full (Renault) service history. Last stamp 2,000ish miles ago.
Generally delighted with the thing, but I have to query the fuel economy.
I bought the car in Lincoln and stuck £50 of supermarket diesel in it. In the intervening week I've driven it home (to Holmfirth), from home to Oldham and back each day (where I work), and to Leeds and back twice at the weekend.
The weather has been cold, of course, and my daily commute takes in a trip across the moors requiring a hefty ascent and descent before enduring a little stop-start traffic. That said I've been driving it really gently to see what mpg I can coax out of it.
The readout (reset upon purchase) is showing me 39.3mpg average. The average speed is 27.6mph. Does this seem right? The stated figures for combined cycle are 47.1mpg. In all other respects the car is a peach - the engine is smooth and pulls like a train, no problems starting even in temperatures of -3c.
I'm far from upset with such mileage as my S-Class 320 CDi only manages 27mpg with similar treatment. I'm simply concerned that failing to achieve better economy might be indicative of an underlying problem - perhaps with the infamous EGR valve?

We used to have a new shape Scenic 1.9Dci, ours would get around 55MPG on a run and it even did 40MPG just around the town. Seemed to average out around 45-47MPG.
So yours does sound a little low.
Has it been serviced recently? Fule and air filters changed? How doesw it drive?
Ours had a MAF sensor problem at one point, which reduced the MPG slightly.

The car was serviced by Renault Manchester around 2,000 miles ago. The service log indicates "cabin filters" but beyond that I don't know what was / wasn't changed.
The car runs fantastically - on the couple of overtaking manoeuvres I've made it takes off like a scalded cat. I'd say it easily equals the merc for in-gear acceleration.
It is exceptionally hilly where I live - my route to work, for example, involves a windy descent of around 200 metres, an enormous windy ascent/ descent of around 1000m, another ascent descent of around 200m and then town traffic. The same in reverse, obviously for my route home.
