Xantia V6 starter
Anyone know if the starter motor on the V6 specific to that model?
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Re: Xantia V6 starter
It is generic to most cars that use the es9 engine..#Stempy wrote:Anyone know if the starter motor on the V6 specific to that model?

When I was looking for one, the chapest was about £150 at: http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=EXS300040102 but they currently show out of stock (but a couple of cross reference numbers...)
I have seen them on ebay a couple of times in recent months.
In my experience, the wiring to the solenoid causes more trouble than the starter itself.

Well I've had mine off a couple of times in the past to 'refurbish' it, but it's beginning to play up again in that the solenoid throws but doesn't always make contact and it makes a dreadful noise when cold so I'm thinking it might be wise to swap it out this time.
Citroen price is £260 so that's more than the car is worth, Euro seem to do an exchange for just under £100, but even that's pushing the boat out a bit!
Will have a scout around, but would you be interested in selling yours John if I have no luck?

Cheers, not in any particular rush.
Checked out ebay under Xantia, XM, 406 etc also looked a Laguna/Espace but they seem to be different. Cheapest I could find was £126.

Thanks very much John for your help here. I'm in two minds at the moment whether to buy the used one with the risk that it might be half knackered already, or to shell out the extra and go for a new/recon/exchange unit. An exchange unit would be about double the cost of the used one.

Well I've been doing a lot of searching around and it's all very confusing. It seems the Peugeot ones are in some way different to the Citroen ones, different part no.s and different prices, obviously Citroen being the more expensive. Renault versions are different again. I think I've decided to get an exchange item that's specified for the Xantia, then 1. it will hopefully fit straight on and 2. it'll have a guarantee and I can be sure it's going to be in new condition. Thanks again all.

Hey, Stempy, I had to buy an exchange starter recently for a Citroen and I checked the Peugeot equivalent, and like you found, it was a different part number and price. I took the old unit along and checked both starters. The only difference was the connection to the LV side of the solenoid, one was a spade connector, the other a screwed stud. There was a significant price difference.
I'll let you guess which one I bought. It took me two minutes to change the termination to the switch cable and the starter works perfectly.
