I would invest in a Haynes manual if I were you, it will give detailed instruction on this operation.
Might be the end of your tacho by the sound of it, curious to know how this was caused, did you stick the leads on backwards by any chance, or or do something wierd like cable the batteries up in series and poke 24 volts up it[:D] or were you just unlucky.
The tacho has a cable going to the post glow relay, if this relay doesn't get a running signal from the tacho it assumes the engine has not been started and cancells the post glow.

dave,
thanks for the help i had parked the car for a couple of days and left my radar detector on, foolish of me i know. the battery was stone dead so tried jump starting the motor turned very slowly through lack of juice and whilst doing so both the rev counter an spedo were flicking right of the clocks and back again but unfortunatly on the last occasion the rev counter never did. you mention an after glow relay could you tell me where it is located.
thanks
mark

Not sure where it is on the Xantia, usualy in the engine compartment in a plastic box near the battery, thats where they are on a ZX and the system is practicaly the same.
There are two identical relays side by side, one is the post glow and the other is for timing advance correction, later models may be different.
They also have coolant temp and throttle position inputs. I don't think there will be a problem with them, more than likely just an unknown result of these particular conditions.

iv seen this happen a few times when jump starting.sometimes (if your lucky) you can get it to jump back round by spiking it,remove a battery lead & touch it on & off the post quickly a few times,if that doesent work get a piece of thin bendy wire (like mig wire) pull of the knob for the tripmeter reset, feed the wire in & flick the needle back.it can be fidlly but its worked for me.
