Another "bargain" V6 on Ebay

Post by fatherjack2002 »

Yet another Xantia V6 on Ebay 260310373333 , selling for £410  . They seem to have dropped in price lately ?
As much as i would like to replace the autobox in mine , i'm finding it harder to financially justify the repair unless i get a realy cheap autobox, i'm going to post a "wants" in here and some other French car forums to see what it brings,

Can you not get a gearbox specialist to repair it for you cheaply?

Having been an ebay addict for years and years it's amazing to see that
nothing is selling for much on there at the moment. How about a silver 1996
VSX estate 2.0i auto for £102 or another 1998 VSX estate 2.0iTCT with
leather for £150. And let's not forget the Activae at around £150 and the
Xm diesels struggling to cost more than a year's road tax...

The Xantia V6's have struggled to sell between 400 and 600 on ebay over
the past year. Considering the figures for the number of registered examples,
these really are bargain prices. Don't go scrapping your V6 too hastily Paul,
both Handyman and myself and I'm sure others too would love to take it
on if you can't justify the hassle/cost!

Paul, if you find another gearbox, do not let on to Andrew, he'll only put the jinx on it again. :P

Hi, Andrew, was wondering where you were as it's been a bit quiet here.

Hi ,i've been phoning/googling, and generally doing a bit more investigative work and i was told that the box is the same as the S2 XM's, ( also Merc Vito's ) so i dropped a post in the wants section of the XM forum, i had a reply saying that the box i'm after was in the later S2's and is pretty scarce, so back 2 paces ! :(
I've spoken to a "local" (25 miles away is the nearest to me ) auto box specialist, a re-build is in the realms of £900, and for him to take out and re-fit a box supplied by me would be £350 , these are prices quoted for "cash" work as well :(
Don't worry about the car being scrapped, this wouldn't happen .I would offer it within the forum 1st, Richard/Handyman has expressed an interest, so at least there's a start if i do decide to get rid :) .
If i do manage to get a box i'll keep quiet from Andrew , that comment about it only lasting a week or two was uncanny ! ,by the way Andrew have you got next weeks lottery numbers as well ????

Cheers Paul.........

p.s. hope your mums on the road to recovery Andrew...

I'm very good at predictions actually with both the past Rugby and Football
World Cups earning me a few quid at work! No dice with the Lottery mind.
Maybe I need to predict the numbers for someone else...

My Ma has been suffering acute chest pains and is undergoing all sorts of
tests but they don't seem to know what it is yet with is highly stressful for
everyone and not helpful for her as she isn't a very good patient and we
now discover prone to panic attacks. :(

With your gearbox situation, it's something I'd take a run at removing the
box myself and taking the box to the specialist to repair - it's your easiest
cheapest option if you don't mind a bit of spannering! I didn't know how to
change Citroen Cx clutches until I did my first one and have done loads
since.

The alternative is to keep an eye on ebay Peugeots! About time one of
them gave it's organs to keep a Xantia going. I'd seriously consider getting
a manual box like the 406 mentioned by DickieG the other day - went for
£210!! Ypou'd have a spare V6 engine to play with and sell the remaining
bodybits back on ebay for the purchase price - that's what the Activa
Despatchers do...

Are the 'clever' autoboxes found in the Xant 2.0i's with the sport/snow setting
the same design box if not the identical ratio/final drive?

I've fitted a 1.8i brand new off the pallet auto in a 2.0i VSX Xantia with
no detrimental effect to living with the car or economy. In fact it's a riot
and far nicer to drive than an equivalent 2.0i VSX auto I've got. The
gearchange is so seamless and the revs barely dip under acceleration
when I first fitted the box I thought the box was duff as I thought it
wasn't changing gears under acceleration!!

If you're talking about the petrol 2.0, it's the Siemens AL4 box.

Paul's V6 would likely have the ZF 4HP22.

I have 2 problems regarding having a go at removing the box myself, firstly i only have basic mechanical knowledge, and wouldn't trust the Bol to help or guide me, secondly we live in a terraced house with no parking facitities, on or off street, if i attempted a repair and it went t*ts up ,all i would end up with would be a pile of car bits in the house , and a car on axle stands in the street  . and thirdly, ( i know i initialy only said 2 points ) we don't have a substancial enough dining room table to store the engine/box on !

Addo, you have thrown another autobox number in just to confuse me , i was under the impression that the box i required was a ZF 4HP20 , or is the '22 the unit used "down under" ?

Sorry, I confused the situation when I mentioned the auto adaptive and
fully active gearboxes on the later s2's...

...isn't that what the kitchen sink is for? Rinsing any excess oil off the engine
can be done quite easily there!? ;)

Do the local newsagents not advertise single garage lockups for rent for a
fiver a week? - even 3 months would be a price worth paying to keep the
car and if needs be I'm sure a collective eye over your shoulder here would
steer you right!

Blog......blog......blog......blog...... :P
