ZX - Rear Subframe mounts renewal

Post by sooty »

Hi its been awhile since I was last here.

My son who now has my ZX is about to replace the Rear subframe mounts.

I've read somewhere (I think), which I can't find in search.

That you do not need to completely remove the subframe to renew the front and rear mounts, by leaving the brake pipes connected. By lowering the subframe just enough with all the pipes connected.

Can anyone confirm this, or offer any advice. please.

Thanks

yes the rear rear bushes are very easy and the front rears a bit more fiddly, but as long as you have the car supported saftly with stands on the jacking points at the door sills, the you can lift and lower the part of the sub frame as you require

Thanks Malcolm,

We are changing the handbrake cables anyway, but you confirm what I read about leaving the Hydraulics intact. Yes ??

Thanks again.

All you need to know about changing the subframe mounts:

Subframe mounts change info

Yes, you can do it without disconnecting the hydraulics. You could probably do it without removing the rear box too, but it makes access a lot easier! Do-able in 1/2 day if you don't spend the other half of the day jacking the car up and down to get enough height to get the mounts out, or forget to undo one set of bolts

Oh, and put a jack under the trailing arm before you drive out the damper bottom bolt - otherwise the weight of the trailing arm hangs on it, and wrecks the thread on the way out

Thanks Richard,

I knew I'd seen it before. :D

The only question I have from these links, who is correct with the socket sizes. As I have the two deep sparkplug sockets as you mention but not the others mentioned by a guest '18mm', also the standard M12 nut is 19mm socket size.

Can anyone confirm the correct socket sizes.

Thanks again

IIRC you need 16mm deep for the internal nuts, the front through bolts are 18mm, and the damper bottom bolt is 21mm. Citroen like using smaller nuts than 'standard' - hence the 16mm where everyone else would use 17mm.
