SAD 660W

Post by deian »

Any guesses what that is?

A black CX estate. I saw it in this morning. Blacked out rear window, it looked a bit weird from behind, then it pulled out of a junction as i was behind it, and it had only 2 doors, so I guess it was converted to some kind of hearse. Although it still had the badges. So maybe some goth-hill-billy conversion.

It was 25 TRI Automatic. It went well too, my micra could barely keep up with it. Besides the tackyness of whatever conversion it had and the tinted windows, it wasn't in a bad condition.

Ironic number plate if it was a hearse at some point. What year was the old W reg cars? Early eighties somewhere I think.

I've a feeling that one featured in a recent edition of the "Citroenian" Dei,

It was indeed an undertakers car if I recall correctly.

It was/still is a professionally converted hearse as featured in an article in
the late 90's Citroenian. Unless it's been Chavved up I don't recall there
being any takiness about it unless dying is seen as such. I believe it'd be
a fitting send off than having the indignity of being carried in a Volvo or
Vauxhall...

W was 1980-81, but the 2.5 TRi model CX didn't come along til quite a few years after that if I remember rightly, so the "SAD" plate must have been chosen deliberately I think.

I recall it was Bradford way and a lot younger car - IIRC the number was
off the Undertaker's previous Cx converted to a hearse too and not because
of any deliberate intention though it was deemed appropriate.

As I recall, hearses only have a permitted licence period before being
retired (no pun intended). The car had a hydraulically powered lift where an
upper (visible) deck was served from an additional lower deck space for a
second coffin! Apparently you need to be able to carry two as regs dictate.
I assume that the firm stopped at this Cx TRi otherwise the number would
currently be on the back of a people carrier! ;)

There we go. Whats it doing in the porthmadog area? Funny to look at from the side with only the front doors.

It did look fresher than a 1981 car. I'm not sure about the differences after the facelift, but this one did look like it would have been the facelifted model.

Oh and the tailgate wiper on this one hangs from the top, not shown in this picture. Was that normal.

Finally, THAT is a goth wagon if only there was one!! I wonder if I can hire it for halloween.

Hi Dei, any other snaps of it? I was hoping to mention this car as a 'spotted' in the Citroenian magazine CX page.

Well just a similar shot further away, not from any other orientation, here:

It's just as washed out and blurry, as my wife was just taking it from inside of the car moving on a wet day, as you can see.

Sorry. I thought there would be someone here with some kind of story or association with it. And you didn't let me down guys. You don't see that kind of community often in the car community, especially paired with such technical knowledge.

It was in one of your columns, Graeme, that I thought I saw the same car but that was a black 1989 "F" plate one when I came to look...

Deian,

the rear wiper is correct; they're all like that!

Apologies for my slight scatterbrain on some of the facts,
Bradford eh? More like your doorstep! Late 90's NOT!! ;)
I do maintain that I forget more than I know!!

If you had the say for your last journey by car, a Cx wouldn't be a bad
choice! In my case, they may be the contributory cause of my premature
departure in one mind!!
