Does anyone know how this unit is fixed to the car?

It's screwed into the inner wing John, into a captive nut. It needs a special tool (ideally) to engage with the cut-outs in the top of it...
Then, as the BoL might say, unscrew it. Only thing is, corrosion may have it stuick fast and the captive nut might start to pull. I think (memory again) that you can get to the underside by looking uder the wing and if you can get a bit of Plus-Gas going on it, I'm sure it'll make the job easier.
A meaty webbing strap as used for to shift oil filters might do the trick to remove it.
