Xantia Scuttle Panel

Post by Fox »

Hi there,
The scuttle panel on my 94 Xantia has started to come away from the
windscreen at both ends. I can get my finger under it in places. I'm also
getting a trickle off water coming into the passenger side footwell, so I
figure the two are related.
I'm going to try and seal it this weekend - does anyone have any tips on how
best to acheive this, and is there anything I should try and unblock while I
do it?

make sure both the screen & the scuttle are clean as possible.clean the screen with a razor blade & a solvent so you get all the old sh*t off.apply a good amount of sealer so it starts to seep out the edge then cut the exess off with a razor blade when its fully dry.

I would like to know what is the recommended adhesive/sealant. I used silicone on mine but it has relatively poor adhesion and strength & it looks like silicone. I’m thinking of rebonding mine with Loctite 5220 (available from RS ) which is a black polyurethane, it is stronger but still elastic.

Remember that you are trying to seal AND bond the scuttle, which is why ordinary silicone sealant can be ineffective.
Windscreen adhesives are usually polyurethane based ~ black ones are preferable because they are less susceptible to UV degradation.
Perhaps somebody like Autoglass might sell you a tube?
It can be applied with a regular sealant gun. I wouldn't expect it to be cheap though ~ £30 at a guess.

If you go to your local motor factors they may stock "tiger seal" or something very similar Failing that try your local bodyshop supplies company, they are bound to have something.
