205 1.9GTi 1988 gremlins PLEASE HELP!:(

Hello all.
The fuel gauge on my 205 wont work.
Iv had trouble with it before ie somtimes it would work and somtimes not.
Iv removed the rear seats and checked the conections underneath*was advised to do this* cleaned them and all apeard to be ok.
This was about a month or two ago but now its just not working full stop.
Im planing a holiday to Ireland soon and im takeing the car and i dont really no what its "mpg" is so im in a big pickle

Any help would be greatly apprichated!

first thing to do then would be is pull the plug off the sendor/tank float unit under the rear seat, if it only has one wire try earthing the pin of the plug with ignition on, and with with the other hand whatch the fuel gauge, if it goes straight to full this means the sender/float unit is cream crackerd,

if there are two wires one might be to send an earth to the low fuel lamp,
