How hard can it be.......

......to fit a 6 speed box to a Xantia?

Am getting fed up of jumping out of the works van and into my car, getting up the road and trying to change into 6th only to find it's not there

Would I be looking at a C5 box? or maybe something slightly older.

Ideally I'd like to keep pretty much the same ratios as the current box (ML5T) but just add another gear for some long legged cruising down dual carriageways and motorways.

Any thoughts?

I've thought about it too Toby.
My last two cars (Laguna 2 and Megane 2) both had 6 gears and it was perfect.
I have fitted the gearbox from a 90bhp hdi to Cassy, and it seems slightly higher geared, but it's still not as good as having 6th (especially as on her old box I used to be able to red line it in 5th!)

I perhaps should just say my engine is the HDi 110 (DW10ATED) just in case anyone needs to know

Think what fuel economy I'd get with a a longer sixth :P

Sorry, thought you had a proper diesel ;) :D

Looks like the C5 had a 6 speed gearbox (some anyway).
Not sure if it's compatible though.
Fingers crossed it is though :D

It all depends if there is a six-speed ML box available..

The big problem could be the width of the car. 6 speed gearboxes are usually longer and thus need more track to accommodate them. For the ML5 'box the Xantia track was widened at the front (fat wings).

By contemporary standards, the Xantia is quite narrow.

If your car had the BE3 'box, a transplant of the BE3/6 'box as found in the Pug 306 GTi6 might well be on the cards but this one would have totally unsuitable ratios for a diesel..

A 6-speed box is a much sought-after upgrade (which I understand are fitted to the more sportier models) and as such are both rare and expensive to attain but I'm not aware of any fitting problems.

If you do find one, how much do you want for yours as I understand xac has successfully installed an HDi box in his with satisfactory results.

Xac's was an HDi 90 'box which is a BE3 and differs only slightly in ratios from the BE3 fitted to the 1.9TD Mike.

Toby has the HDi 110 which has the ML5 'box and is incompatible for fitting on a 1.9TD without a serious amount of work :( Everything is different. Driveshafts, cable gearchange, hydraulic clutch to name but a few.

I don't know if it's a different box but the 5 speed C5 with the HDI 110 engine has reverse next to first.

Mine only has a 5 speed box. I think the 6 speed came with the facelift and increased engine power.

Sorry for delay,my internet is down and am using a temporary arrangement for the time being.

I have done some light investigation and I believe some C5's were fitted with an ML6 box. How would I go about finding the dimensions of said box and my own?

Might be quite an achievement trying to find the box from the C5 as their not exactly at the age where they are broken for scrap.
