Megane losing power under acceleration - not rev above 4000

Unread post by lewski74 »

Hi, just purchased a 98 megane 1.6 16v cabriolet. Upon driving it down the motorway as soon as i hit 70-80 mph it lost power, and even If i put my foot to the floor, it went down to about 2500 revs before it picked up again. I notice now that i can't get above 4000 revs in any gear, feels 'blocked' even that explains it.

I had a galaxy that did this years ago, was a MAF sensor, does the megane have one of these? (p.s. car has been fully serviced and driven by a retired lady for 6 years).

any ideas would be gratefully received as i can't seem to find a solution anywhere.

Thanks

I'd look for any petrol restriction problems.
Like a blocked fuel filter which is a very common (and cheap) problem.

Then get the fuel feed pressure from fuel pump checked.

You would have either a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor or a MAF (manifold air flow meter) sensor. As you say a likely suspect candidate.

I had a similar problem on an astra a few years ago, you havent by chance just had an ignition coil fail have you?

On the astra i drove the car a few miles on a misfire due to a coil pack problem and the unburnt fuel in the exhaust from the misfire destroyed the CAT causeing it to block the exhaust resulting in a loss of power that progressivly got worse till i had to get the CAT replaced
