Shoot me down

Post by MikeT »

I'm wondering what the negatives are against fitting a cone filter direct on the turbo.

I can imagine three, maybe four possible candidates but haven't checked out the reality of them. Just wondered what you all think/know.

My first thought is what's the point? The standard filter has a large area so free-flow filters are unlikely to offer much performance gain, and more importantly a cone filter will take in hot air from within the engine bay rather than the standard system which takes in cool air from the side of the radiator, therefore allowing a greater charge of air and therefore higher performance.
Then there is the matter of insurance, as you can guess I'd leave it as standard.

You could always try a K&N or similar standard size filter for the standard airbox, they give a bit more flow, up to about 5% I think.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Reasons not to -

1. Noise
2. Reduced performance due to increased heat
3. Possible increased wear on engine and turbine blades if poor quality filter used
4. No

You could always try leaving the present filter out and taking the car for a drive to see if there's any improvement.

Someone will say this will damage your engine. If its not a dusty day it wont - after all it takes many months and miles simply to make the filter dirty. 5 miles isn't going to do any harm.

Just make sure there's no accumulated dirt below the filter element just waiting to be sucked through the engine. The makers of these engines wanted every HP and so I don't think inferior parts were fitted - after all who produced more power from diesels of equivalent age?

Thanks all. I'll go for the panel filter instead. I did suspect that heat, water splash and poor airflow could/would be the issues. Looks like heat is the biggest no-no but I didn't know it would create more noise.
