Sussie Pipe Seals

Post by Gregg1100 »

Hi,
Last weekend I changed a rear power cylinder on son`s car.. Not too bad a job till I found that the vent and return outlets on new cylinder were at wrong angle--held on with the most stupid clip ever. Molegrips and cussing got angle better. Then came the rubber sealing tube on fluid supply pipe-entering the cylinder. It didn't seem to want to go into the cylinder flush , so had to exert pressure on end of tubescrew whilst turning said screw with spanner--without crossing the thread. Got it done eventually, just short of hammer throwing, , but Andre Cit must have had ears burning, the slurs I put on his parantage.
Got to put an antisink sphere on his car next, plus rear pads---keeping GSF going on our own here.

My question is; are lhm supply pipes normally as hard to get fitted into cylinders and other parts as the trouble I have had today???.

Hi there and well done for not setting fire to it

Honestly, I have had lots of trouble with the 8mm pipe union nuts and/or the pipe end and seal not going in before. Less so these days as it seemed to be mostly in my early days of working on Cits. I have had lots of 'fun' with the pipes on the CX rear corrector - one of them does a 180deg turn in a small space to then connect to the corrector - it was really hard to get it in place as the pipe wouldn't push in far enough to let the union nut to start threading. It seems that reusing old seals contributed to this as I never have the problem with a brand new seal. I think the old seals disotrt and drag in the bore. Also, it the pipe is bent near its end, the pipe might go in OK but then the union nut screw is at the wrong angle to thread, usually can be visible but on the occasional fit by feel pipe it's a 'mare.

I've found that fitting a pipe union should not require too much force to fit it in, if there's a struggle then it's under too much stress and sommin is wrong. It should slide in with no resistance and then step in further (that's when you know the 3.5mm pipe is seated correctly) and then the union nut should wind in a few threads without force (just by hand) before resistance is felt and the need for the spanner. I used to always put the seal in first and feed the pipe in second contrary to instructions I found it often worked OK but also often, it would catch the pipe seal and mush up badly. Now, I slide the seal onto the pipe and up to just starting to go over the 'bulb' and with the union nut as far slid as possible away from it, I feed it in to the bore until it does the 'step' down without the seal moving much I know then it's going to be OK to slide down the union nut and start threading it.

Have you been reusing the old seals like I used to (ant still do TBH  )

I think it comes with practise.

Sussie Pipe Seals

Hi Graeme,
I used a new seal, but was threatening to lop off 1/8" off length. That would have sorted out the prob.
:D

Very Happy Shocked
Greg
- done that myself actually....worked a treat too! not certain why it occasionally doesn't fit properly - they should all be identical. Just one of dem things?

Fitted a replacement pump to our CX 25ie Auto today and knew that getting the pressure pipe in would be fun (hint - remove the bolt holding the first pipe clamp on the front of the gearbox first) However, when I test fitted a seal in the pump before installation, I realised it was too long and I would NEVER have got the nut near the thread. I went back to my bag of seals and ratted around till I found one that was shorter.

All the seals were brand new, yet not all were the same length. Probably 3-4 mm diff between some of them.

The shorter seal made it possible to refit the pipe. Getting the clamp bolt back in was more difficult.
