xantia auxillary belt ...help

the auxilliary belt on my xantia has got a bit ropey so i thought it best to change it (1.9td with air con)

got the new belt, carefully ripped of (i mean removed

) all the irritating plastic in the wheel arch

compared the wheels and coggy things on my car to my haynes book of lies and

its totally different....it doesnt have an adjuster poking downwards (though the wheel it should be poking down from is there and has an allen headed bolt which is just inviting itself to be loosened)

it does have an extra wheel underneath the longest run of the belt (between the crank and the air con) that looks to be supporting the belt

do i have a very rare one not covered by the manual? and has anyone ever seen this set up before (and knows what i need to loosen to change the belt)

In the PDF linked too, it's on page 78 of 310 (well the diagram is the same), with "71" at the bottom of the page image.

If the dampner is stiff, then the needle bearings have probably collapsed in the tensioner arm.
A new one is about £30-40 if memory serves and it makes doing the job so much easier.
Once you've got the tensioner arm locked up in place, where it mentioned using tool 57711-TE, it's just a 1/4 square bit (the smallest square bit size) so if your ratchet kit has a large to small adaptor, you can use that to hold it in place while you tighten the allen bolt up to the required tension.

Hi Peter,

What type of compressor have you for your air con as there 2 different belts sizes 1700 and 1750.

1700 for the sanden compressors and 1750 delphi harrison.

But I think it depends on year of manufacture and maybe mk type.

The bol is actually good with its instructions for removal and replacement.

I have a mk 2 1.9 TD with delphi pump and the belt fitting is the same as the 2,1 TD.

Kenny thanks that explains a lot...

I took my aux belt of recently to check tensioner bearing/slack.. could I get it back on !

only with a screwdriver levering it!...

it seemed the belt was a tad to short.. think someone has put a 1700 on when it should be 1750..

..... i think i will take the old belt of and play mix and match at the main stealers.....

wonder why haynes missed this point when they wrote there helpful manual

Hi Guys.

I noticed an error in my previous entry;

It should be Delphi harrison pump 1700 and Sanden pump 1740 belt size.

For fitting see french car forum topic no. 24409.
