I have just fitted one to my XM that had nuts but no washers (from GSF) Before you fit them take the rubber boots off and fill them up with grease, it will make them last a lot longer.

My preferred method of removal is to use an open end spanner to pop the joint off the ball and then use mole grips to hold the ball. If the joint is noisy it'll pop quite easily.

I think it's possible to grip the joint on the other end without having to dislocate it.

Well done. You can usually stop them from turning by jacking the hup up, providing the other side is on the ground, this puts pressure on the joints allowing you to undo the nuts unless they are very rusty.
