lots of black oil in coolant

Post by xantiasmiff »

Hello everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle. My car is a v reg xantia2.0 hdi 90 bhp. Yesterday i did a 300 mile round trip to wales and the car ran normally. Noticed a patch of oil later on return and opened up coolant cap to find it full of black oil. Checked sump and level had dropped to below halfway with no signs of coolant evident. Temperature gauge was normal throughout trip (no overheating) and no smoke from exhaust. Doesnt seem like headgasket to me.I was thinking oil cooler failure. Is this a possibility? Thanks.

welcome to this forum

first thing to check is the oil cooler as they have been known to leak the oil into the cooling circuit

Thanks Malcolm. I will bypass the coolant pipes to it tomorrow and hopefully watch some nice black oil emerge, otherwise it will become very expensive. Regards, Ian.
