Is it maybe the brake pad warning light?

thanks for reply richard, there does not seem to be a brake pad warning light, the book says that it is a warning lamp for hand brake and fluid level and indicates that the hand brake is applied or not released fully...also that the fluid level is insuffient...the lamp may also indicate a malfunction of the electronic braking distribution..... i have looked at the pad thickness today and they are about 4 to 5 mm,the book says 2mm minimum

Could be a fault with the sensor in the brake fluid reservoir.

it sounds like its a faulty level sensor, the sensor doesent come seperate, its part of the reservoir.

You might try detaching the wires and shorting them, see if it goes out, which would pinpoint or eliminate that line of inquiry.
