Xantia alarm

I recentley bought a 1993 Xantia 1.9td sx.The alarm is switched off by the key switch under the bonnet,when I switch it on the alarm sounds straight away.The central locking works ok with the remote.Has anyone out there any ideas.Also from a previos post the whining noise was a front wheel bearing (now fixed)thanks for the advise.

Have you tried holding the alarm (ultrasonic dissable) button in while switching on the ignition, as per owners hand book.
