Berlingo Towbar wiring

Unread post by srx600 »

Ive recently bought a 2003 Berlingo, which I need to fit a towbar to. The towbar isnt a problem, however I'm pondering how to do the electrics.
Options are

1 - Buy a Berlingo specific wiring harness, which just plugs in. This has the advantage of being easy to fit, and in theory shouldnt effect the existing wiring, but at £52 isnt cheap

2 - Do what I have done in the past and splice into the harness using the usual blue connectors which crimp over the existing wires. This is not ideal and I have heard of problems with the connectors causing corrosion. It is however cheap. I read elsewhere that this approach shouldnt effect the VAN-BUS wiring.

Has anyone any advice/experience of towbar wiring on Berlingos they can share.

theres no problem splicing into the wires, it won't affect the multiplexed wiring but dont use the scotchlock connectors as they are very unreliable. solder the wires instead.

Are you doing 12S as well as 12N? Being multiplexed isn't it advisable to use something like a smart 7 bypass relay. Or have I been over-cautious in wiring my C5?

it wont cause any problems on the early type multiplexing.
on the later systems as fitted to the mk2 C5 & the C4 also wont cause any major problems but it can mess around with the bulb failure warning systems.
