HDi Oil Cooler

Hi All,
I removed-eventually- the oil cooler on my HDi 90 Xant. The one that came off was made by MODINE-USA. The spare I got from a breaker (from an HDi 90) , is a VALEO. The Modine one is half as heavy again compared with the Valeo.
On the Citro Service site, when I put in the Vin code and go through to the parts page, the item 7 is not mentioned in the part number section to right of the pics. Yet the seals for both Modine and Valeo coolers are.
I am tempted to throw the Valeo one on--after all, they won't alter cyl. block to fit different coolers.

Modine cooler on left on both pics. First pic shows the block side--second shows filter side. I don't fancy forking out £180 for a new cooler.
Oil flow holes in different places on coolers, but oil has to pass up through hollow retaing tube.
Any ideas please. ??

Seems to be me who has only this sort of aggro. :? :shock: :( ](*,) .
Anyone with an inkling on what I am doing, lol.

Hi Greg,

Looking at the pictures, and having replaced these on a BX, (when I spiked hole in the water section), I am 99.9% sure they are interchangeable.

These are often called oil coolers, when in fact they are oil heaters, as the running water temperature is higher than the oil running temperature.

No - they are DEFINATELY oil COOLERS 8)

Its very true that the coolant is the first media to heat up, and then subsequently will also transfer heat to the oil.
But thats the initial state only.

Later when the engine has reached working temperature - and the car is loaded on the run - maybe towing a camper - the oil will slowly and surely reach a MUCH higher temp than the coolant.
This is because the oil is the media in DIRECT physical contact with the combustion chamber (inner cylinder walls and pistons), which the coolant is not.

It is often overlooked that the engine oil apart from its lubrication and cleaning job, plays a very important role as a coolant media too.

I spoke to local Cit main stealer today--gave him Vin number--apparently Valeo is the only one supplied now---as checked by me on Cit Service site, so as soon as I get a new seal, it will be going on, oh, and a good supply of new jubilee clips. I will consign those spring ones to bin. Thanks for replies,

Hi...1. post on this forum :D

My HDi (110 BHP) seems to be running quite hot on the oil temp...(water temp is absolutely ok )

100C during normal days with temperatures between 10-20 C

Pulling our caravan the temp seems to soar to 130 C ...

What are your normal oil-temps....and are these coolers know to get clogged or loose their efficiency through the years...

My injectors are prob. not at their best although im quite happy with the Km/L (MPG)...could they give the extra heat due to inefficient burning of fuel

Mines done 255T Km...
