My new Xantia powerplant...

Unread post by Johnno »

but will it fit??

Image

This is about as good as it got this weekend - had to abandon the final fit as the relationship between the car/hoist/garage roof conspired against me. It's a long (boring) story. But another lost weekend beckons before the beast has its heart back. And England beat the Kiwis at Old Trafford. Damn!

Still, reasonably happy with the C5. Miss the old 2.1 a bit - and I sure would like a maintenance manual for the C5; I just know I'm going to need it at some point.

Have a good week, all.

I would make the thing fit, one way or another.

Given the propensity for old English engines to spew oil, it won't look this good for long! But I've tried to ensure that all mating surfaces are flat and I've used sealant in appropriate places. Mind you, it was always the carbs that leaked most - and at today's prices, I won't be able to afford any losses!

Glad you liked it.

I take it that it is a Jaguar engine? I was just looking at the shiney before.

I rebuild a few Hillman Imp engines (No, I know they are not in the same universe, never mind league). Never had any problem with them chucking oil out. Damned things blew head gaskets like nobody's bussines though.

They could look nice polished up.

Drool ...

2 SU's - like my old Mini with a cooper manifold and 2 SU's as well.
Pretty much the same performance in a Mini - like the one you have there in a Jag 8)

It's a 27 litre Meteor from a tank John.

An engine derived from the Rolls Royce Merlin I believe.

I've been following the story of this monster (it's shoehorned into a Rover SD1) in PPC for a couple of years now. Currently he is having trouble with the autobox and finding a torque convertor that can take the torque which is into four figures at just above idle...

The car is apparantly good for 200mph...

Thanks Jim I saw the 27 litre reference in the first bit of the posting.. but decided it was not possible in a car engine bay :D

must be one hell of a beast..

I managed to persuade my mum to buy an SD1 (only a 2300) , when I was about 14, not really knowing much about BL etc.. Actualy seemed a nice roomy comfy car.. with a great wide dashboard full of green backlit clocks IIRC

I had 2 or 3 P6's when that age too, one of them, a 2000TC made a very nice car...

Gordon effing Bennett!!

Mind you, I find the "Practical Performance Car" stickers somewhat ironic...

Reminds me that many years ago I read an auto magazine article about a home-build with a Merlin engine that was known as "The Beast". Anyone remember that? It was effectively an open chassis with a couple of seats on top, if I remember correctly.
