Xantia front legs

Hello there
My 1997 Xantia 1.9td has developed a strange knock from the o/s front wheel. On inspection if you jack the front up and put a bar under the wheel the strut moves up and down as if there is no resistance at all and I get a knocking noise. The n/s in comparrison moves up and down about 1 1/2 to 2 inches before resistance is felt. I am presuming the leg is knackered. Can anyone advise and also what sort of a job are they to change? I could do with knowing before I invest my £109 + vat for a new one.The car has recently had a full sphere change if this makes a difference.

I would think its only a drop link buggered, go and have another look and pay particular attention to the ball joints at each end of the link, especially the bottom one.
These things are a bit on the micky mouse side at best.

Thanks Dave it was in fact the anti roll bar drop link. Found out garage that condemned front leg had not got engine running when they tested it with a bar underneath. No wonder the leg seemed devoid of suspension. (Wont be using them again!)
