While rushing to swap over a fuel pump the timing belt slipped and when I went to start the car it initially turned stopped presumably when a piston hit a valve but before I I could stop it carried on.
On rechecking I couldn't manually get all the holes in line. When I turn the cam shaft manually it appears as if the cam shaft its self is bent as the cam wheel moves from side to side as it turns.
I'm presuming I have damaged the head - what would be the most ecomical way of fixing the problem?

Finally I have a head spare from a turbo diesel bx - will this fit the 1.9 Xantia?

From what I've seen on newsgroups things may not be quite as bad as they seem.
From what you say you have bent the camshaft. The valve heads are parallel to the piston crowns and so the valves get a straight push and so damage the camshaft rather than bending the heads/stems.
This means you may be lucky and be able to replace the camshaft alone and since you have a similar one on your BX TD head I would suggest that this is your first job.
The heads are undoubtably similar but whether they fit I don't know. How old is your Xantia. I understand some mods were made to overcome cracking and believe the later heads may be thicker. I'm sure someone knows the answer.
Finally remember to replace the bearing caps in their original positions as they are line-bored on the head and to mix them up will probably seize the camshaft.
