A/C compressor options

Naively, I considered it best to remove the A/C compressor for dismantling and inspection or replacement but soon realised it's connected to a pressurised(?) system and might be a bad idea to undo the unions so I left it alone.

What are my options here as I value a working system? How much, if any of it, is a DIY job or will I mostly need specialist help, other than a final test and re-gas?

EDIT: :oops: I just realised there's a seperate A/C forum, sorry Admins. Please move it if required though there is a lot of Xantia knowledge in this forum so not sure where it belongs anyway.
