Next! Xantia plugs done, still cra*p starting -LEMON

Post by RugbyPete »

Ok, so the glow plugs were done two weeks ago, at first starting was better but this week its rubbish again.

If I haven't got enough problem on my hands taking a day off to replace the radiator then the heater matrix also having a hole in steaming up my windows, im also getting laughed at when i first start the car up due to all the smoke!

Whats next, fuel filter? The unit that drives the glowplugs? Scrap yard?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cant start:Glow plugs
Cant stop: Brake pads, Brake discs
Overheating: Radiator leak
Cant see: Heating matrix leak
STOP!: LHM leak
Cant show my face: Loads of smoke - unresolved!

Definitly the fuel filter if it hasn't been changed for a long time, otherwise I would suggest air getting into the fuel line or no volts on the glow plugs. You can easily check for air by pumping the primer until it goes solid, before you try and start the engine.

Are you sure the matrix is gone?

Xud 9 cooling systems are under such high pressure you wouldn't get a steamy window you'd get a soaking carpet.

That is unless you need a water pump as well

Could it be rain coming in through the heater air intake below the windscreen?

Perhaps the drain is clogged and trapped water being evaporated and condensing on the screen.

If it isn't accompanied by a distinctive smell I'd check to see how the system is drained.

I had a similar thing on the GS and there were a couple of rubber 'teats' in the wheel arch. Squeezing them released a load of leaves and dust, along with a minor waterfall.

Pete,

You need to systematically work through the fuel system and the problem will reveal itself. Colin's thread here will help no end.

Air and Bosch pumps do not go together at all well.

If when you renewed the glow plugs the car was starting better & now 2 weeks its back to bad starting I would check the glow plugs are working.

The TD need long burn plugs for the post heating cycle it has (normal diesels don't have this) ...its not uncommon for normal plugs to be supplied instead of the long burn plugs the result is that they only last a week or so.

Might be worth digging the feeler gauge out and checking the valve clearances too....
