Smoke or Steam in Xantia 1.9td

Post by soupy_sam »

Hi

I drove my car 10 miles to the next town and realised that the heater was on cold so slid the lever over to Hot and put blower on. The car filled with either smoke of steam not sure which.

I pulled over and checked under bonnet rad n water level fine oil fine no apparent leaks when I turned lever back to cold it stopped and has not done it again since this morning.

Any ideas please guys

How long did you leave it on hot? Maybe just condensation in the ducts.

Was there any smell? if not then it probably wasn't any form of smoke. Keep a close eye on your water level in case you have a slight leak in the heater matrix. If neither of these then, as johnd says above, probably some form of condensation. If your water level stays ok and it doesn't do it again, I wouldn't worry about it!

No smell just a big cloud.

It happened the second I slid the lever from cold to hot and was gone in 20 seconds or so.

But it was quite frosty morning

Sounds like condensation, to make sure try it when the temperature outside is warmer although you may be waiting till sometime next year now

Xantia, steam out the vents - only one conclusion I'm afraid - matrix gone  . Check in the passenger foot well - there is a sort of spigot under the dash, this starts to get wet when the matrix is leaking.
