Spheres replaced .... BUT not ALL! Why?

Post by debutant »

Last week my car had its 81k miles service and I moaned about the rear suspension being hard. They replaced the 2 spheres and told me they were completely gone .... how am I susposed to know, I drove a F*rd Escort XR3I before I bought this wonderful car. Anyway, the rear suspension is a bit scary right now, because it feels so SMOOTH However, now all of the sudden the front suspension does feel a bit hard (what do you expect when the rear suspension improves by 100%+).
I am thinking of going back to the Cit garage and have the front spheres replaced aswell. Shouldn't they have done it at the same time anyway? They car does drive like a dream now again and it finally remembers me at the cits my dad bought in the old days (Cit GSA's).
Is it recommendable to replace the front spheres aswell (including the 5th one ... where is it for again?) or should I just wait till it fails aswell. I thought general wear and tear occurs on all spheres equally ... I might be wrong.
Please some advice is appreciated big time!
By the way ... the Cit garage sorted ALL my other little annoyances on the car for a very fair price
Cheers,
John

debutant - In most cases it's the exception rather than the rule to change all spheres, not least because rear spheres seem to last longer, and get left longer by the owners. A complete sphere change on some xantias could mean 7 spheres (if non-sink spheres fitted) or even more for the activa versions. This could get just a tad expensive, so most garages won't replace the spheres unless asked.
So long as there is adequate damping action on the front then spheres won't be changed as a matter of course - but if you feel you must change them then be aware that Citroen front sphere replacement is one of the easiest DIY jobs on ANY car - easier than some oil changes.

There's no need to replace the spheres, because they can be refilled, if they are still in good condition, which is far cheaper. But, don't wait too long - if membrane in the sphere break, replacing will be the only option.
Thare are many topics in this forum concerning spheres, so check them out.
If you are interested, you can also try my formula on front (old) and rear (new) spheres, and report the results. Here's the link:
