I can absolutely guarantee that the light will not go out if press the plunger down. If I press mine, the boot light goes off.. from dubious memory..
If I begin to slowly close the hatch, the light will go out when the hatch is about horizontal - it doesn't get anywhere near the latch. Try it, you'll see
