Xsara Picasso Fuel Lift Pump

Post by stuartadair »

Morning all,

Friend of mine has a 2002 Xsara Picasso 1.9TD which died. He previously had a problem with the lift pump in the tank which was solved by banging the bottom of the tank. A local garage has confirmed that the lift pump has now died.

How difficult is this to change and whats the method ?

Thanks

Stu

Not too easy I fear.

The problem is that there is no access plate as on the Xantia, with the Xantia you simply lift the back seat up and bingo, your are straight onto the job.

The Xsara is a different story, you will need to drop the tank and this means removing the exhaust and the handbrake cables, all this is not difficult, it just makes the job take a lot longer. All for the want of a hole in the floor!!!

All this is from my experience on an older Xsara, it may be that in their wisdom, Citroen may have decided to put an access plate in the later models? Maybe someone else will know this.

Have fun.

Regards
Slim.

Just had the same problem on a '99 Saab 9-3 2.0i.
Fuel tank had to come down to replace a standard petrol lift pump

I believe its on purpose - to reduce the risc of fuel or exhaust fumes in the cabin.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like its tank out time.

Maybe if Pierre never spent all his time on strike he would have thought about an access plate

My Xsara hatch has access to the pump under the back seat like the Xantia. I think the hatch & estate versions of the Xsara always did, but for some reason the Picasso didn't.

Thanks Nick - Thats clearly because Frenchy just felt like being awkward that day.

Feeling very anti-French at the moment

Aren't the Xsara and Picasso floor pans the same? If the Picasso rear seat will lift, why not get a Xsara plug from a breaker , take some measurements and cut an access hole.
