Exhausts...

Post by RichardW »

Holy cow!!

My Dad reports exhaust has failed on his 02 Xsara HDi 90 - gone either side of the cat at the front. New section? £250

Slightly worried, I looked up the price for the equivalent piece on my Xantia HDi 110. £360  At least there is a repair pipe for the Xantia so if the long pipe goes at the back, it can be repaired without having to replace the cat.

So, if you are looking to buy an HDi, make sure you look underneath at the state of the exhaust, and deduct a suitable amount from the asking price if the exhaust is looking duff

Cheers Dickie, was not aware of that site. Certainly a lot cheaper than National were quoting - I'm not mad keen on fitting exhausts myself though - it's a nasty nasty job best done by someone else on a 4-post lift!!

Its certainly worth getting plenty of quotes.
When I was phoning around for prices for a cat on my Xsara HDi last year Kwik Fit quoted just over £300. When I mentioned I'd already been given a price of £245 from National they said "ok we'll do it for £184 then"

It is my experience over 30 odd years, that diesel exhausts bust due mainly vibration, rather than the acid corrosion from within as on petrol burners. We had our 90Hdi Xantia repaired 2 years ago by simply replacing the short Cat section with a piece of tubing, (with suitable re-enforcing gussets). It now goes better and uses less Derv with no further problems.
