Best tyres on a C5?

Post by Johnno »

I'm going to need to change all four tyres at some point soon and have been checking out prices. These days I do about 15,000 miles per year in all conditions. The car is fitted with 215/55/16, W rated. I'd like the Michelin Primacy HPs - but they cost. Best deal on those so far is £440 fitted. The same outfit will do 4 x Avon ZZ3 tyres at £315 fitted.

Does anyone have any experience of the latter? Wet weather grip and quiet running are two significant criteria for me. The Michelins get an almost universal thumbs up on these counts and on longevity - but £135 is a difference that's hard to ignore!

Any thoughts, anyone?

Have you enqired about Kleber? - Made by Michelin - and transformed our ZX 1.9D to such an extent that my wife commented unprompted.

They are all I was hoping for from a Michelin - quiet, compliant (ie absorb sharp rough bits which means a nice elastic steel breaker), grip well both wet and dry and seem to be lasting well.

Price was good - a few pence short of £40 for a 175/65 x 14 fitted etc at my local friendly tyre depot.

I can recommend Kleber too. They are brilliant on my BX 16v. ATS Euromaster have them on offer at the moment I think.

I had a pair of ZV3 on my previous Xantia - I wouldn't recommend them - they didn't last that long, and I wasn't all that impressed with the grip.

Tyres?

Post by bigjl2 »

If you are near me, purfleet essex, I have a costco card and could meet you at the lakeside depot and get you sorted, no better tyre for a Citroen than a michelin, the wear the best aswell.

From memory, I think the size you need is less than £90, but I will try and pop down to check this weekend.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Big J: Thanks for the kind offer - I'd certainly be interested in what Costco will do the tyres for - provided it's not too much trouble! I'm not near Purfleet, being in Teddington, but if the saving was sufficient, I'd certainly consider a day out. I have a cunning plan involving bringing the unused spare into play. It's a Michelin Pilot Primacy (not HP) and it seems that getting three more like that might be the way to go.

Let me know how you get on. I'm going to be away for a few days (catching some late snow :D ) so I'll reply on my return.

Cheers.

I had a look today, the cheaper primacy, was £87 +vat, just over £100 each, that includes valve, balance and disposal of old tyres, one thing you didn't sell some xantia winter tyres on ebay did you,as that chap was from teddington, and I haven't picked them up yet, the size I had checked prices for before was, 205/55/16 which are a lot cheaper £70 inc vat, the primacy hp worked out at just over £117 each inc vat. Was in a bit of a hurry when I was in there today as I had to get the kids from school, will pop in tonight or saturday to get the exact specs, speed ratings etc. I am only five minutes from costco so it is no problem, might aswell make use of the discounts to help fellow board mambers.

tyre prices

Post by bigjl2 »

Went in tonight and double checked, only two tyres in your size both w rated, prices were correct,£117 for the HP, and £103 for the normal primacy, set of four for just shy of £415, i would be inclined to leave the spare and match all five, there will probably be an offer on a full set soon, the best offer was last year when they gave 25% off when you bought a full set of 4. I think the next sheduled offer is going to be 10% off, but it may not be for a few weeks, that is one of the good reasons for buying a full set , they give extra discount.
